My wife and I live on a small farm in Locust Grove Oklahoma. Our farm sits on 215 acres of pasture, forest and meadow land. Streams, ponds and abundant wild life. We fell in love the moment we first saw it. Miles of trails and paths through the forest. Fossils and arrowheads in the creeks. There's even old homesteads from the early 1900's on the property to explore. To this day I still haven't set foot on all of it. Pretty sure our two basset hounds have .
We first started raising pigs for our own use. We wanted control of what we consumed and try to grow as much of our own food as possible without chemicals or negatively impacting the environment of our farm. Pigs were one obvious choice. We found when managed properly and the right breed, they actually had a positive impact on the health of our pastures and the trees that surround them. When moved regularly, the soil is aeriated, fertilized and beneficial grasses and plants emerge. When given regular attention and care, probably one of the most friendly animals to raise.
As we grew and began to deal with the reality of selling to the public, it became abundantly clear we could never compete with the prices of commercial pork found in the big box stores. Animals raised in crowded conditions. Sometimes only 24 square feet per animal ( 6' x 4'). Their feet never touching dirt. Many treated with antibiotics and vaccines. Bred for quick growth, low fat content and maximum profit. Quality of life at a bare minimum. Then butchered in facilities that process 30,000 animals a day. That's just the harsh reality of what it takes to feed millions of people at the lowest cost possible.
If price can not be the number one factor, then what do we have to offer to our customers?
One easy answer is taste and quality of our product. It's not just a little better. It's worlds apart. There are flavors unique to our pork that aren't found in a commercial environment. The breed as well as a diet supplemented by nature. Pecans and acorns. Roots and tubers the pigs unearth as they work their way through the pastures. Grasses, clover and any other tasty thing they find along the way. These things all add to the outstanding flavor profile of our pork.
The peace of mind that these animals are raised humanely and live like a pig was meant to live. Not crowded into pens, elevated above their own waste on metal grated floors, but to wander and explore. Roll in a muddy wallow to cool off. Nap under a shady oak tree. With a rotational area of 13 acres and 40 pigs per run, that equates to about 14,000 square feet per pig. More living area than most humans with a lot better view.
When buying from us, you are not just supporting a local farmer, but one who cares as much as you do about what you consume. Pesticides and herbicides are not used on or near the pig pasture areas. We have free ranging animals to keep the weeds at bay and pests away. We don't want them exposed as well. We do not use antibiotics or vaccinate our pigs. Over crowded conditions necessitate those treatments and that is not an issue on our farm.
Sometimes seeing is believing. Which is why we extend an open invitation to visit our farm. Customers or potential customers always welcome. We even welcome those thinking of raising their own pasture pigs to share what we've learned and continue to learn along the way.
